The Case of the Gay Caveman

8 Apr

Archaeologists in the Czech Republic have found a 5,000-year-old male body buried with the kinds of burial objects that they would normally find with only female bodies.  The press (and apparently one of the archaeologists) are claiming that this indicates that he was gay

Leaving aside the fact that telling a person’s sex from their skeleton alone is not perfect*, applying modern ideas of what makes a person homosexual to a person who lived 5,000 years ago is pointless speculation.  It makes me angry that my profession is being used for an agenda like this.

Don’t get me wrong; I’m sure there have been homosexuals throughout history.  But I’ve never seen, for instance, anyone claim that a female body found with what people like to assume are burial objects for men, and assume that that made her a lesbian. (Apparently, that means she’s actually a man.)

This is like meeting someone for the first time – you don’t speak their language, you’re only allowed to look at 12-15% of their body, and you know nothing about them – but you guess that they are homosexual.  Completely nonsensical.

Hell, even the words “homosexual” and “heterosexual” weren’t defined the same way in our own culture just 150 years ago.

*While I don’t want to give the impression that the sexing of a skeleton is all guesswork, it takes a keen eye to do it properly, and the skull and pelvis to do it accurately.
